South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center
My first week in Pierre I frequented the municipal library to get online. The parking lot ends in a hill that typifies the local surroundings.

When K came for the week she showed me the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center on the other side of the hill, an almost perfect building for the environment since it is built right into a hill, underground. The architect, Blake Holman1, inspired by Native American design, succeeded not only in making a building that was aware of its surroundings, but also one of the most energy effecient structures in the United States. Inside I talked to a staff member of the South Dakota State Archives and he told me they usually see deer right outside the elevated windows.

An ode to the female settlers of the Dakotas -

1I couldn't find them online so I called their offices to see if they have a website. The conversation was as follows: David: Hey, I took some pictures of the SDCHC and was posting them online. I wanted to reference the architect, Blake Holman. Do you have a website? Unidentified Male: No. David: ... Unidentified Male: ... David: Uh, [cough], thank you. Click.
