31 to 31

Minutes are ticking by as the stroke of midnight approaches. When it does, I'll be 31.

I was born in East Africa's oldest hospital, atop a hill in Kampala, Uganda.  This hospital, Mengo, was the product of missionary work. It was founded in 1897 by a missionary doctor named Sir Albert Cook. It's popular to have disdain for missionaries, but my life forces upon me a different perspective; not only was my born in a missionary hospital, I was educated in missionary schools -

The arc of my life so far has been from Kampala to Nairobi, Nairobi to San Bernardino, San Bernardino to Portland, Portland back to Nairobi, Nairobi to southern California, and finally southern California to South Dakota.  A lot of wear and tear on the shoes. And the soul -

Well, here's to the newness and oldness of being 31.  Old chapters close, new adventures are beginning, and life just keeps pressing forward.
