Memorial Day, 2003.
Remembering my classmates from high school and college who died in the service of their country.
James Arthur Burns, 1st Lt, USMC: September 13, 1969, Quang Tri, Viet Nam. Panel 18W, row 78 Viet Nam Memorial
Willis Wayne Emerton, PFC, US Army: October 9, 1967, Quang Tin, Viet Nam. Panel 27 E, row 80 Viet Nam Memorial
Robert Charles Rudd, Sgt, USMC: October 14, 1967, Phu Bon, Viet Nam. Panel 28E, row 4, Viet Nam Memorial
Ted Titcomb, LTJG, USN: Died at sea during a carrier landing, 1970.
I've chosen photos of these men as I remember them best, not in their uniforms as they died, but in the middle of life as we lived it. I don't remember them as dead soldiers, Marines, and sailors. I remember firm handshakes, beers shared in the shade of trees by the river, a slap on the back during a ball game or soccer, good times on double dates, a sly twinkle in the eyes.
We were boys together, we had dreams of glory together. When we became men, we learned that freedom is not free. May we remember the price as we remember our friends, and may they rest in peace.
