Stupid political comments, part 4

It's Trent Lott, of course.  His asinine remark about Strom Thurmond has generated a lot of commentary in the blogosphere, but very little in the mainstream press - so far.

It has garnered a mention on Slate, which does get a lot of mainstream readers although it is not the mainstream press.  (Slate does note that the story was first reported on the ABC News weblog, which is another point to appreciate.)  Tim Russert included it on Meet the Press on Sunday.

Otherwise, the only people who have made their comments known are Al Gore and Jesse Jackson, and no one pays much attention to what they have to say these days.

Update -- Now Tom Daschle has spoken up, suggesting that Lott may have simply been trying to be funny.  That actually may be closer to the mark.

Further update -- Several days have passed and it's gathering steam in the mainstream press, before and after Lott's half-assed apology.  Tonight [12-10], Drudge reports of a comment made by Lott in the same vein back in 1980.

He's toast.  Say goodbye, Trent.
