This article in the SJ Mercury News really sums up a lot of my solo professional life. In addition to the Big 3 (differentiation, selling, isolation), I can add some other gating factors to solo consulting success:
1. Focus - with no boss (other than customers), no set hours, transient peers, the only thing between you and infinite distractions (like blogging) is your ability to focus on the task at hand.
2. Balance - I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned. The biggest problem most people have with this life is balancing the need to do the current work versus finding the next bit of work. This leads to a feast-famine cycle.
3. Networking - related to #2, networking is the best way to avoid the feast/famine cycle. Know lots of people, stay in touch. You never know when a friend or an acquaintance will become a client.
But even with all that, I wouldn't go back to being a corporate animal. So far, the solo life is much better.
