The following motion was passed unanimously at the ccTLD meeting in Shanghai today:
"THAT we announce our decision consistent with points #6 and #9 of the Stockholm Communique to withdraw from the DNSO at the end of the DNSO Names Council Meeting on Oct 29, 2002."

State of the Domain (SOTD) released its third Quarter 2002 report today. Now, the SOTD report is a good read but when you read it you should note that SOTD is a spin off from SnapNames, the same good people that brought us the gTLD WLS.
Now when reading this report it has new coverage on the ccTLD's. I did find curious the numbers listed for .nz. It has, based on numbers by Domains Worldwide, that .co.nz has 132,264 names as of October 16th. This is curious as the number of .co.nz names based on figures provided by the DNC is that on October 14th .co.nz had 98,992 active names (with a further 3,244 pending release). A 30% margin of error is rather large as it is not hard to come by .nz stats if you bother to look for them.
Do the rest of the figures have similar levels of errors?

The DNC issued a warning this evening over a misleading mail out by DomainNamesNZ. Mark Harris posted on the InternetNZ members list that he received a letter. He also scanned it and placed it online. Mark also pointed out the the colour used on the letter is very similar to that of the colour Domainz uses on its letter head and website.

Last week I saw a copy of CIO magazine and as I picked it up it fell open to a story called Domainz II — the reply which was a very interesting read. I was unable to link to it until now as the CIO website was 'under development' until yesterday. Now you can also read the story that started it all: Demented over Domainz

At 1am on Monday 116,462 active and 4,026 inactive names, for a total of 120,488, where transferred to NZRS. The inactive means that these names are pending deletion as they are at final stages of not being renewed and therefore most, if not all, names will likely be deleted in a month or so.
The active name total is nearly 4,500 names higher than used for all the budget and cost projections for the first year of the registry. InternetNZ council was aware of the higher numbers at the time of deciding on the higher of the two proposed wholesale prices.
Also of note only 349 active .maori.nz names were registered between September 5th and October 14th. This is at least half of the number of names I would have expected.

The DNSO Whois Taskforce has released its Interim Report for public comment. At first glance they have recommended that gTLD and ccTLD whois should align. I wrote about this last month and I am planning to detail my opinions comparing whois with other sovereign registers.

In March 2002 the NZ goverment made a submission on issue in geographic names and UDRP. the interesting part of the submission is "New Zealand law, custom or practice does not preclude the use of country names under any circumstances." If I owned newzealand.com I would be using this submission in my defense of WIPO D2002-0754.

IDG has a story about the up coming 'installation' of the SRS this weekend. This is more of a SRS Lite as no one other than Domainz is able to access it. Other registrars are unable to access until December. Lets hope that it goes OK and not a repeat of May 2000...
