Philip Glass' Roundtable Discussion on Music and Technology
Philip Glass asks a bunch of questions, like "Does new music technology imply a different way of listening?" to four different composers--Morton Subotnick, Paul Miller (aka DJ Spooky), John Moran, and Michael Riesman. [missingmatter]
Miller: "In the industrialized countries, your average child understands video games, how to use a telephone and how to navigate the urban superstructure. They are a part of the quotidian, constantly updating landscape in which they live. Composers, maybe, should check out what the kids are up to. It's a real eye opener."
Glass inaugurates Andante's guest editor series Carte Blanche, "a bold new multimedia series in which prominent cultural figures explore their interests and passions in classical music". Hmmm, nice idea - similar to what Edge does in science.
