The Library of Congress' National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program was established by an act of Congress in December 2000.

According to the article "The National Digital Information Infrastructure Preservation Program: Expectations, Realities, Choices and Progress to Date" by Dr. Amy Friedlander (D-Lib Magazine, April 2002), the LOC is expected "to lead a national planning effort for the long-term preservation of digital content and to work collaboratively with representatives of other federal, research, library, and business organizations." All this with a paltry $100 million budget. So far, even with $5 million allocated to date, there is not much to show for the program's ambitious mission:

Develop a national strategy to collect, archive and preserve the burgeoning amounts of digital content, especially materials that are created only in digital formats, for current and future generations.

Given the number of times the word "archive" appears on the NDIIPP site, it's surprising that there's only one reference (so far) to the InterPARES project. This appears in a bibliography to the report "Understanding the Preservation Challenge of Digital Television" by Mary Ide, Dave MacCarn, Thom Shepard, and Leah Weisse.

Of course the LOC has done a lot of good already in the field of digital preservation, but leading the charge without recognizing the other cavalry on the field is pure folly and a waste of money.
