I signed up with Sun to receive a copy of their new desktop solution. This last week I received a CD in the mail. Yesterday I spent a few minutes trying it out.
You boot from the CD and follow some graphics install steps. Once installed you can test out quite a bit of the functionality. It looks real good. The install will create a few files on the first drive it finds (c:) but other than that, it does not touch your existing system and OS.
They use SUSU Linux and StarOffice. Overall it came right up and looks pretty neat. We are getting ever closer to a solid desktop as opposed to the Microsoft solution.
As more software vendors embrace Linux / Java solutions this platform will just get better and better. I look forward to the day when I don't need W2K anymore and can use Linux for all my work.
As an example, the Linux test box at my desk has been up for over 22 days since I last booted it to install that latest kernal. I suspect I have had to boot my W2K machine at least 4 or more times during this time period, mostly to install security updates.
