The land where terror won. An author and activist talks about the atrocities committed in Guatemala, the people too frightened to speak of it, and about America's shameful support of the perpetrators. [Salon.com]
in the late 1980s i knew a guatemalan man. he was an excellent worker, very dependable and upfront, a person i could count on. we were both employed in the los angeles facility of a large multinational corporation. he told me all the boys he had grown up with in guatemala were either [1] expatriates working in the usa and sending money home to guatemala like him, or [2] gunmen in death squads, or [3] dead. he said there were no exceptions as far as he knew. his tale filled me with dread for the global scourge of pax americana and for the conspicuous silence of our passive, polite, obsequious and well-behaved media. -wr-
