Here's an article on the kind of Mapping used by SmartMaps for visualization of scalar data. I like these maps. No time to write about my enjoyment of using these maps, but I will note that there appears to be a 2 layer deep implementation in SmartMaps - first the Sectors, then the Companies (by Market Cap).
