I bought two programming-related books on Sunday: CSS Pocket Reference by Eric Meyers and Core J2EE Patterns. I try to resist buying new programming books since a) most of the information can be found on the web and b) very few are worth their weight in paper.
When a book is skinny, I give it a few bonus points right off the bat. These books tend to say exactly what they need to and nothing more (that they fit in my purse doesn't hurt either). Books on my shelf that meet this criteria are are the Pragmattic Programmer, Effective Java, The Non-Designer's Design Book, and User Interface Design for Programmers. (There are many more, these happen to relate to my current project).
CSS Pocket Reference is only a few millimeters thick. Core J2EE Patterns has to be carried in my backpack, so I will be reviewing it with a more critical eye.

My bookclub's discussion of Mark Twain's Roughing It will take place Monday, November 25th, which gives me six days to both find a copy and read it. The average Amazon review was five stars
based on 19 reviews - looks promising!
I am really enjoying the Ken Burns: American Experience series on PBS. Last night was the first of two parts on Mark Twain. This is perfect timing since our bookclub discusses Twain's Roughing It next Monday.
Last week was a very inspiring Jimmy Carter: part I. A few weeks before that was Frank Lloyd Wright: part I.
Is anyone else out there catching only part I of all of these stories?
