permalink Links for Ed

Ed needs to start a weblog (he hosts his own server for crying out loud) - I tried to convince him of this as we marched in the Market Street protest Sunday. I told him about all of the great web resources I found by having a weblog and an aggregator. So here is a partial list of links I am trying to find for him:

Ok, and here are some sites that could help us find the WWI information that eluded us: (fyi, we were trying to remember the events and conditions leading up to WWI excluding the assasination of Archduke Ferdinand)

And this one is for me, for the next time I fail to finish the bookclub selection before the day of the meeting:

Oh - one more, for that python script I hope to write to automate image thumbnail creation:

permalink Name Change

This weblog will have a new name within the upcoming week. I have struggled to find a name that: is easy to remember, somehow says something about me, is available as a domain, and is not too cutesy. I like having fish in the name because it is also my name. I don't care for the word blog, but weblogfish sounds kind of awkward and forced.

I thought of just using ([first initial] + [last name]), but afish.com is taken. I'd really like to use imafish.com, but alas, that too is taken. The new name will be: shesafish.com. I bought it at godaddy.com for eight bucks! It's mine for the next year.

permalink Wondering

How freaked out? Not very. This is not meant to imply that being freaked out is somehow weak or ignorant. It's just the way I am.

wondering....

Robert K. Brown:  "Just wondering out loud, with how freaked out people got about 'going orange,' and how much the administration had to spin back the significance of this decision, with the amount of air time spent calming a jittery public, just wondering how people will respond to red."

[jenett.radio]
This is what I am wondering: am I too cynical if news of 'code orange' immediately gave me this suspician: is the current administration using these threat levels to SELL the upcoming war?

permalink Visual Referrer Display

f(Apache Refferer Logs) = visual traffic display. Nice.

Visualizing your traffic flow.

My sysadmin and I have been playing with graphviz today. I was playing with it on Mac OS X and he used Randal Schwartz's perl script in Web Techniques Column 58 (Feb 2001). He was able to quickly produce a diagram that shows user flow based on Apache referrer logs. The script feeds your log files to graphiviz's dot program and outputs a gif file.

We were both surprised that we didn't find more people writing about using graphviz to analyze of patterns of information-use. Graphviz seems so easy. I know James has been doing a lot of work on generating diagrams from referrer logs using OmniGraffle and Applescript.
