Joan Ryan on Dean Craze

Just not enough written on the Dean craze (America is just Dean-infected these days, who can write us a perscription? yukyukyuk). Here is a condensed version of Joan Ryan's column on the Dean phenom (from today's SF Chronicle).

Lead:

"Presidential hopeful Howard Dean is using the Internet more effectively than Nigerian entrepreneurs and Viagra manufacturers combined."

Kicker:

"On my way out of Ted's, a man in a T-shirt and shorts was coming in. He scanned the Howard Dean placards on the walls and the Howard Dean buttons on everybody's shirts.

"Who," he asked the bartender, "is Howard Dean?"

Ah, so many people to reach, and only 14 months until election day."

Rush Limbaugh on Dean supporters

Rush Limbaugh on Dean supporters

I offer without editorial comment, today’s transcript from RushLimbaugh.com.

Interesting. [Rick Klau's Howard Dean Weblog]
Interesting indeed.

.... I think the ultimate aim, of course, is twofold. It’s to keep the Dean name alive and prominent on this program, and they also do so in a way that presents themselves and thus supporters of Howard Dean in a totally reasonable, intelligent, and civilized way. And they never tell me I'm wrong about anything. They never, ever call up with belligerence and say "you this,” they say, "Perhaps you have misunderstood one of Howard Dean's positions." And then they restate it to me in a way that may help you and me both to understand what Howard Dean really thinks about this particular issue and the obvious objective here to represent Howard Dean constantly on this program, to have his name mentioned and by virtue of that happening, whenever one of these people calls, his supporters are always going to be heard as reasonable, polite, thoughtful, thinking, all these things, which is in contrast to the way the Democrats are talking about Dean. Forget what I'm saying. But the Democratic candidates are out there portraying this guy as a wacko leftist about to drive the party off the cliff and all that. [snip]

...Because the candidate himself has said, "We're not going to be intimidated by Rush Limbaugh. We're not going to be." And so they have, obviously, evolved this and strategized this procedure, and we'll keep the lines open. We'd very much enjoy talking to you, because while you think it's an opportunity for you to present Mr. Dean's positions in a way that maybe I'm misunderstanding so I can get them right, it's also an opportunity for me to point out to you how you may be misunderstanding your own candidate's positions and I have an equal shot at your mind just as the candidate himself might. So it’s a dual-edged sword. If you Deanites are still game, and you want to continue the plan, continue the program, continue the process, I'm all open. In fact, we, by our very act of doing certain things, elevate candidates to different levels. And when we decide to parody a candidate, that candidate has arrived.

Craig Blog

A year ago this coming Saturday, I noted that Craig Newmark was aware of weblogs. On Sunday I learned that he now has his own weblog!
