Frenchman Arnaud Gerard has claimed the Under 18 road race at the World Championships after out-sprinting a late six-rider breakaway in Zolder on Saturday. Finland's Jukka Vastaranta claimed second with Australia's Nicolas Sanderson taking third.

Santiago Botero must be relieved he decided to go to Zolder. The Colombian suffered through much of the 2002 "Vuelta" despite winning a stage and wondered out loud if he would compete in the world championships.

Edita Rumsas was freed from a French jail Friday after posting 20,000 euros bail. The wife of Lithuanian rider Raimondas Rumsas, was arrested on July 28th on the last day of the Tour de France, with a carload of illicit drugs.

Suzanne de Goede, of the Netherlands, came from behind in a sprint to line to claim the Womens Junior Road Race at the cycling world championships in Zolder, Belgium on Friday. The winner profited from a superb team performance from the Dutch who dictated the tempo throughout the 76km race.

Italian Francesco Chicchi claimed gold in the Men's Under 23 Road Race at the World Cycling Championships in Zolder, Belgium on Friday with a barnstorming sprint to the line. Dutchman Hans Dekkers crossed the line second, but was disqualified for his part in a pile up just metres from the finish.
