Apple supported technologies approved by DVB. The Digital Video Broadcasting Steering Board (DVB) has approved a revision to its implementation guidelines for audio and video codecs over a broadcast Transport Stream. The revision includes two technologies supported by Apple Computer Inc., H.264 or Advanced Video Codec (AVC) and High Efficiency AAC (HE-AAC) audio codecs. [MacCentral News]

Firefox 1.0 released. The Mozilla Organization has released Firefox 1.0, the full version of the Web browser previously available as a widely popular preview release that netted a total of more than eight million downloads. Firefox features popup blocking, tabbed browsing, privacy and security features, "Smart Keyword" searching, live bookmarks with RSS integration, a customizable interface and other features. Improvements since the preview release offered in September include better tabbed browsing control, language localization for 14 languages, and a large number of bug fixes. Firefox is free, and available for Mac OS X, Linux and Windows platforms. Mac system requirements call for a 604e/266MHz or faster, 72MB hard disk space and Mac OS X v10.1.x or later. IBM dominates list of top supercomputers. With performance almost double that of the Earth Simulator, in Yokohama, Japan, IBM Corp.'s Blue Gene/L on Monday was officially ranked first on the Top500 list of the world's fastest supercomputers. IBM built four of the top ten machines on the biannual list, which was set to be announced Monday evening at the SC2004 conference in Pittsburgh. [InfoWorld: Top News]
