Another week almost done. I finally got the next installment of my D&D game out.
I've noticed that there isn't much here that people would find interesting, so let me expound on what I think would be worthwhile.
I'd like to make this a place where people I know might want to come and learn about what I think might be worth while to look at. Lately I've been looking at blogs and what uses they can be put to. It's a really cool space and in combination with a number of other technologies it could really be something useful that people could use.
On another note, let me mention a little about myself. I've been in the software business for a number of years, mostly working in the custom application development arena. In addition to my involvment with developing applications, I've also taught programming classes, teaching people how to program in Delphi, Java, Visual Basic, and basic web development. Currently I'm a Senior Engineer for Vultus. I was the architect for WebFace Studio, and also the team lead for it up until a few months ago. Now I've been tasked with development of future products...which I obviouslly cannot talk about here.
Now let me talk about a few of the technologies that I've been involved with, that way people know where I'm coming from.
While I was in school at BYU I got a job as a network and security administrative assistant. I spent much of the time installing and evaluating security systems on unix systems as well as helping maintain some of our DNS systems for the school. While I was working with those systems, I became familiar with Linux and used it as my desktop system while I was there. (Note: This was back when Linux wasn't as popular as it is now). I've still got my copy of the first printing of Running Linux. What's cool about that printing is that O'Reilly sent it to me for free because I'd posted a number of helpful hints to newsgroups trying to people trying to get Linux running on their machines.
Well, I was getting close to graduating and so I decided that I needed a job closer to what I was doing, so I went to work for a company called Erudite. I started programming in PowerBuilder. Thankfully I spent all of two months on it and was moved into Delphi. I became the "expert" in Delphi at the company and was given eval copies of all the Delphi products when they came in. Then JBuilder started to come into the scene and I got involved with the first Betas for that as well....(Boy has that product come a long way...those first beta's were painful).
At this time I had become a trainer for the company and spent three fourths of my time programming and the other fourth on the road teaching. When I came back from a two week stint of training, I met the new person who would be in charge of "The Delphi Group" at the company. Well to make a long story short, some of the key people from that group eventually left and started iBase Systems, which changed it's name to Vultus earlier this year.
So, what technologies have I been involved with? Well here is a short list (in no particular order):
- Java
- Delphi
- Visual Basic
- C/C++
- Perl
- XML, XSLT, XML Schema, XML Formating Objects
- Linux
- Tomcat
- EJB, Java Server Pages, JDBC
- Jabber
- System Security and Administration
- PGP
- UML
- Software Architecture
- Agile Software Development
