PowerPoint Makes You Dumb

Columbia investigation board is accusing NASA of presenting complex information as power point slides, instead of detailed ink-and-paper technical digrams. In the process losing key information. I believe the same is true for the software industry, where drawing high-level diagrams is in vogue. There is more to software complexity than what can be captured using diagrams.

I am not suggesting that digramming is not useful. But it cannot be solely relied upon to capture the complexity of an enterprise system.

Are .NET based custom software development companies overstatting their experience? Laura Barker thinks so.  I am not sure if inexperience is to blame for slow growth. I think it is the overall economy. Plus good Windows/COM developers and not starting from a scratch when working with .NET.

Useful Links

BizTalk Server 2004 Beta Newsgroup

The Architect Journal The inagural issue of the journal is out. Read the article on SOA - Understanding Service Oriented Architrectures. I liked the article. It is one of the better articles I have read on SOA. One interesting thing mentioned in this article is about the level of abstraction. It claims that services are the new order of abstraction in a steady progression from functions to objects to components. It also makes a case for service everywhere and not to let current current technlogy (read IIS) detract you from the SOA perspective. In fact this is also the message the Indigo team wants to convey. They see Indigo as providing as low cost SOAP dialtone inside a .NET managed process without the overhead of going through IIS. Another interesting part is the comment out implementation architecture of SOA. Authors claim that SOA implementation will be based on a set of components.

Behind the Indian outsourcing craze

My friend Raj (who has a keen market sense ) recently advised me to tread with caution when considering stocks such InfoSys, Satyam etc. These companies will face a tough test in coming days from the likes of Anderson, CSC, Bearing Point, who are set to increasingly challenge the Indian based outsourcers on their own turf.

In this article InfoSys CEO discusses how his company differentiates itself from foreign outfits.

Twentieth Annual Indian Song and Dance Competition

This past weekend we attended the Twentieth Annual Indian Song and Dance Competition held at University of Marlyland Baltimore County(UMBC). The force behind this twenty year long tradition is Ustad Hamid Hossain.Ustad Hossain is a faculty member at UMBC. He also gives private lessons in Hindustani classical vocal, tabla and sitar. It is because of Ustadji's efforts that so many people of all age groups have been able to stay connected with the music from the Indian subcontinent.

Ustad Hamid Hossain performed live on Friday evening at the UMBC Fine Arts auditorium to kick off the festival. Accompanying him on tabla was Enayet Hossain, who is considered as one of the finest tabla player in the United States today.

"Twilight of the PC Era?"

Nice follow on discussion around Harvard Business Review "IT does not matter" proclaimation.

As someone who works in software development industry for a living, it is hard to imagine that we have already seen all major software innovations. Indeed it will sad if we have to live with current state of software from here on.
