Report this error to Microsoft?

You have seen this message appear countless times as you are recovering from a fatal OS crash. I must admit I have clicked "yes" a few times, only to be told that it was most likely a driver related problem. That information is not very useful since it does not tell you which one.

Well, I was pleasantly surprised today. Soon after reporting a BSOD to Microsoft, I was told that the problem was caused by the UltraNav driver on my IBM Thinkpad R-40 and an updated driver was available at the following location http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-52259

During the PDC it was announced that Microsoft has been mining the error data they have  collected for the last couple of years.  Interestingly they have found a large percentage of the crashes to be caused due to video drivers. So they have started sharing that data with driver vendors. In future they will be sharing this data with application vendors as well.

Also, just in case you already don't know this, there is a way to route the generated error report to the administrator within your company instead of sending it to Microsoft.
