Embassy Of India, Washington, DC

The other day I had go to the Indian Embassy in Washington DC to notarize a property related document. The experience was less than pleasant. Here are a few tips that may save you some time:

  1. There is no easily accessible parking area [*] close to the embassy so your best option is to metro in to Dupont Circle. From there you can either walk (right on Mass Ave for about 8-10 minutes) or take the Metro buses N2 or N4. You can get a transfer ticket for $ 1.25 which is valid for both directions.
  2. Indian Embassy only takes cash or cashier checks. And unfortunately the cash machine located inside the embassy is perpetually broken. So make sure you bring cash with you. If not, there is a Riggs Bank and a Bank of America right outside the metro station.
  3. If you are in need of extra pictures/ copies etc your best bet is the CVS close to the metro station.
  4. Please remember that embassy observes both US and Indian holidays. So be sure to check here before you make the trip.
  5. The documents submitted between 9:30AM -12:30 PM and can be picked up between 4:30-5:30 PM the same day.
  6. To be able to certify your documents, the Indian Embassy requires that the documents be notarized.

[*] You may be tempted to park in the adjacent streets. But please be sure to check that you are not parking in an area reserved for vehicles with special diplomatic permits.
