Sneak Peek: Risk, Uncertainty and Startups
I was asked to speak on developing a culture of risk taking at the upcoming Wisconsin Economic Developers Association conference. Wisconsin is among a number of states that is actively cultivating entrepreneurship as a long-term economic development strategy, and there seems to be a general perception that people in Wisconsin are too risk averse.
I got to thinking about how culture emerges from shared meaning and tools, so I decided to address the following:
- The difference between risk and uncertainty
- How different kinds of startups differ along the dimensions of uncertainty, likely profit, and investment
- Tools for exploring the boundary between the knowable and the unknowable, and
- Some examples of how effective entrepreneurs manage risk
