PocketKnife Peek is an Outlook add-in for screening your e-mail as plain text before opening it in Outlook. The add-in can be used to view all Outlook message formats, but is aimed particularly at averting the threats lurking in HTML mail. A convenient tabbed view lets you easily examine the:

  • Message in plain text,
  • HTML source (if any), and
  • Internet header.

Click on the Peek button (or type Alt+P) to view the selected message as plain text. The PocketKnife Peek window presents all relevant information about an e-mail. At the top of the screen, the title bar displays the subject of the message and the message format (Plain Text, HTML, or Rich Text). The Header shows the sender, the recipients, and the time and date the message was sent.

HTML mail is a mixed blessing. On the positive side, it can enhance the transmission of information and make messages more visually appealing. Balanced against these advantages is the threat of viral infection simply by opening an e-mail. Moreover, spammers can employ web bugs that send information back information about you.

The most effective method of dealing with suspicious e-mail is to delete it unread. Not everyone can afford this luxury, however, since a strange looking e-mail could be important. In addition, some viruses are disguised in e-mails from friends and colleagues. PocketKnife Peek lets you explore the contents of a message without opening it in Outlook.

Although Outlook has a preview pane, it previews the messages through Internet Explorer, so you are exposed to the same vulnerabilities, whether you open an infected message or preview it. There are no known problems viewing plain text or rich text messages, but you can’t tell the message format until after opening it. Likewise, you can view the HTML source in Outlook, but only after first opening the message. With PocketKnife Peek you safely preview your messages as plain text.
