Recreating "value addedness"

Sabre replacing EDI with Web services

This is a topic close to my heart because I used to work for an EDI Value-Added-Network (VAN). One of my jobs was to identify how EDI data could be sent over the public Internet. There were really to main sides to this. The first was the data format: when XML came along, it seemed like the no-brainer answer to that problem. Of course, there was no reason why old-style fixed-width EDI data couldn't be sent over the Internet, but it made sense to take advantage of the many tools at each side of the transaction for creating and parsing XML. Aside from the data format, the other problem was how to re-create the "value addedness" of the private Value Added Network on the public Internet. This included security, reliable messaging with once-and-only-once delivery, audit logging, and conformance to Service Level Agreements. The products which Vordel has built are all about adding this "value addedness" to the Internet as a medium for sending and receiving business data.
