I just finished installing distcc on all my machines. It works great. I haven't formally tested the speed up but it is shorter on all the program I tested. It really makes the lights of my network switch flicker! The fact that it runs on top of Open Mosix helps a lot I am sure. More formal result later on. Now on the recompile of the kernel usign distcc.

I've been using OpenMosix almost since the day it was released. And I still run its version 2.4.16: "If it's not broken, don't fix it..."
However I feel a bit outdated now as a group of Indian programmer from Pune (a.k.a. The MAASK group) just released a patch allowing to migrate process using shared memory. Why is this patch this important and justify an upgrade? It is because it allow program like Apache and MySQL that use shared memory. The patch isn't perfect but it is a long step in the right direction. For us it means that we may someday be able to scale our database infrastructure by adding boxes rather than by upgrading the boxes. It also means moving from Sun/Sybase to Linux/MySQL. Guess how much we can save with 8000 users on the network...
So step number one was to install distcc to spread the load while compiling the kernel. When you have a mix of P133/P200 you need it. I'll test it later today and see how it goes.

How to set a Windows XP or 2000 machine to Auto-Login, or NOT to Auto-Login.

If you have a Windows XP Professional machine and you want to set it to automatically logon a user, use the Tweak UI Power Toy.

If you have a Windows XP Professional or Windows 2000 machine and you want to set it to STOP automatically logging in a user, clear the saved User ID and Password that is stored in the registry.  See Q234562 for details.
