I would SO do this...:
I came across this story the other day and it struck me as something, that given different circumstances, I would do. To summarize, it is a story about a contractor that was working on a project at Apple in the early 90's that was cancelled. While most of us would begin to look for another job/project, this guy decided that the project was just too good/important to drop, so he began to start showing up to "work" at Apple, even though he had for all intent and purposes, been laid off. Not only did he continue to put in the long hours we are all used to, he did it for free, living off of his own savings.
Now I say that under different circumstances, I would do the same thing, and I would... In fact, if they would let me, I would work at Google for free just to have the experience. Sometimes we as post-Internet boom survivors get to wrapped in the "what's in it for me?" way of assigning value/imporatnce, and forget that we are doing some pretty interesting stuff here and we should enjoy the ride. Here at LMB, we are embarking on a number of infrastructure improvement projects, which promise to be pretty cool due to some of the novel approaches that my team and partner vendors are proposing.
Also, it makes me happy to think that there are still people in the world that hold the "coolness" factor above monetary gain. When I touched my first machine (an Atari 400), I did not think about the untold riches it could bring me, I just thought it was the neatest thing I had ever seen...
Did I mention that Google has a really cool hit counter? (no, I am NOT obsessed with Google... okay, maybe a little).
