When vendors "go bad"
One of the challenges that I face as a manager who is responsible for the vetting of potential vendors/solutions is that of vendors "go bad". What do I mean when I say "go bad" you may ask? Well it is when a vendor either begins to bash the competition as a sales tactic, or when they begin to promise things that they KNOW that they cannot deliver in hopes that you won't notice once the product is delivered. They do this to try to win business for their companies, but more times then not, the solutions that they are providing are either inadequate for our needs, or worse, don't exist.
I have become quite adept at spotting when a vendor starts to "go bad" , and it is almost comical to watch. It is usually signaled by the "in the next release of the code" or by "it is on the road map", or my favorite "their stuff sucks!".
I get very tired of vendors trying to sell me "futures" or "vaporware", and pass it off as reality. I know that it is my duty to perform due diligence, and I do so willingly, but I would also expect that vendors would enter into these discussion and NOT misrepresent themselves on a regular basis.
Is that too much to ask?
