Apple moves in interesting directions

Let me just state up front that I am a huge fan of Apple. I have used a G4 PowerBook as my main computer for almost two years now, and I am very impressed with its speed, ease of use and styling. It is a beautiful piece of engineering and OS X is a very powerful and stable operating system.

This week at MacWorld, Steve Jobs announced a very interesting product, the sub $500 dollar Mac called the "Mac Mini". This unit is meant to compete against low cost PC/Windows offerings, and at first look, it appears to be a winner. My only complaint is that it does not ship with a monitor, or a keyboard/mouse. This is not a huge issue, as most people looking to "switch" most likely already own a monitor and keyboard/mouse combo, and Apple has made it very ease to migrate them to the new unit.

Astectally, the Mac Mini is a great design, about the size of a cookie tin, and it packs everything a person would need to get up and running quickly. It ships with OS X 10.3 and includes Apple's great multi-media suite called iLife which allows you to build your own music CD's, HDTV DVD's and mix your own music from any source.

I think that Apple has made a very smart move (time will tell) in offering a sub $500 dollar unit, as there as been much talk of late how one of Apple's other offerings, the iPod has drawn people to its computer hardware. If Apple is able to successfully execute on its marketing and sales campaign, I expect that the PC market will become a very interesting place very soon.
