OSDL Releases New Paper on SCO's Claims: "The Open Source Development Labs have released a paper entitled SCO: Without Fear and Without Research [PDF] where Eben Moglen debunks SCO's claims to copyright infringement, and also discusses how they contradict themselves by citing that the GPL is both invalid and provides them legal protection. More information at the OSDL site and via an Internet.com article."

Nokia biggest manufacturer of digital cameras?: "In the handset category, Krantz says that about one-third of Nokia's phones shipped this year will include either an internal camera or the ability to attach an external camera. He quotes Richard Gould, portfolio manager of the Rockland Small Cap Growth fund, who says all Nokia handsets will include camera phone capabilities within 18 months." John Robb writes: "I have to worry about what Volokh says.  I can either publish what I am working on (and alert planners and the public to an impending disaster they need to know about) or stay silent in worry about legal action against me.  Very interesting situation.  I think I will publish."

The threat to universal Internet connectivity: "According to Cerf, the balkanization of the Internet and the erosion of end-to-end visibility has been under way for a decade, thanks to escalating security threats and rapid Internet growth. [Item Permalink] Helping Mac OS X to grow: buy software! -- Comment()
I have found numerous excellent applications for Mac OS X, some free, some shareware, some commercial. Here is a list of my purchases for the year 2003 (in addition to Mac OS X 10.3, of course):
  • Mellel is an excellent word processor for the humanities. I'm currently writing my first magazine article using Mellel, and so far there have been no complaints from me.
  • Path Finder is a Finder replacement for the power user. The integration with Safari and Dock could be better, otherwise this leaves Panther Finder behind.
  • F10 Launch Studio provides shortcuts to applications, and yet another application switcher.
  • CopyPaste provides numerous clipboards, and helps in moving various bits of data between applications.
  • iStorm and iChalk make it possible to brainstorm using Rendezvous.
  • EvoCam provides a nice web camera application for my iSight.
  • Earthdesk provides a dynamically updated desktop picture of the Earth.
  • GraphicConverter is my first choice in image manipulation.
I must say I was a bit surprised at the amount of Mac software I have bought this year.
