![]() Apple Hurting Developers? "The "free vs. pay" debate has been raging in the past month, with Andy Ihnatko wondering about it in Macworld Magazine, readers on MacSlash discussing it in record numbers, and everyone thinking, but what about those guys who build stuff for the platform? Dan Wood, of Karelia, maker of Watson, knows what it's like to have his platform removed from him. Yet people still buy Watson. Panic lost Audion to Apple's iTunes, yet it still sells copies. Providing reasons to use the platform is Apple's job. They have a lot to recover from, including slower processors, a heftier price tag and the mythos associated with PCs, so why not provide a free framework to do stuff with? Let's not kid ourselves, iPhoto sure isn't Graphic Converter or Photoshop." [MacSlash: A daily dose of Macintosh News and Discussion]

![]() Apple Safari 1.0 (Beta): "Speed is the main reason to try Safari, but the product also introduces several eyebrow-raising innovations." (PC Magazine via MyAppleMenu) [MyAppleMenu]

![]() Ken Bereskin's Radio Weblog writes: "While there is much to discuss about Safari, I wanted to start with something small but fun. On the main Apple website, Safari users are greeted with a unique welcome icon - a small thank you to everyone that is using our new browser. Everyone on the team has been blown away by the reception to Safari and appreciate every one of the 1 million plus downloads."

![]() Greatly exaggerated: "According to this, development for Chimera might after all not be as dead as it first seemed. According to this, reports of Phoenix's death are also greatly exaggerated. So what was all that fuss about? Probably just about finding out how many people actually care about those two browsers and whether it's worth the time and effort to continue working on them. Not too great a prospect, if you ask me." [The Aardvark Speaks]

![]() Where are all the Safari nightly builds?: "I know we are in beta-testing zone, but why not have nightly Safari builds available a la Mozilla and Chimera? I like reading about all the improvements to Safari over at Surfin' Safari, but it'd be nice to actually see them. I imagine it would simplify the bug-reporting of bugs that have already been eradicated." [Sample the Web]

![]() The GNU-Darwin Distribution 1.0: A Perspective from the Founder: "Darwin is the "open source" core of Mac OS X. This standard Unix-like environment is an opportunity for savvy developers to provide Apple users with free software favorites such as The GIMP, Open Office, and Mozilla. [...] It is also clear that Darwin is not proprietary, in the sense of trade secrets and patents, because the APSL license is OSI-approved and Darwin is "open" source. APSL covered code can be proprietized by Apple, and Darwin is at the core of Mac OS X. This Unix-like environment has provided the first major opportunity to reach Apple users with free software, so that they can learn the values which bring that software to them. GNU-Darwin distributes an enhanced version of Darwin OS, and free software packages which are compatible with Darwin and Mac OS X." [kuro5hin.org]

![]() Linux vs. Mac: The Pitched Battle for Second Place: "We all know who makes the world's most popular desktop OS. With a greater than 90 percent market share, Microsoft's status is clear. But what's not so clear is: Who's number two? Until recently, Macintosh inarguably held that spot. In 2003, though, you can feel the two operating systems' momentum shifting fast." [osOpinion]
