![]() Jean-Pierre Serre awarded the first Abel Prize: "The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has awarded the first ever Abel Prize to Jean-Pierre Serre of the Collège de France, Paris, 'for playing a key role in shaping the modern form of many parts of mathematics, including topology, algebraic geometry and number theory.' The prize is named after the brilliant Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel (1802-1829). A memorial fund was established in his name in 2002, and one of its purposes is to award a prize for outstanding work in the field of mathematics.
