![]() I wrote a net column on collaborative software development using the open source model vs. closed source (Amatöörienergiassa ohjelmistokehityksen tulevaisuus). I think the networked open source model has the future - the feodalistic model of closed source and software patents seems anti-competitive (and even anti-capitalistic). But who knows, this would not be the first time when a closed solution wins over an open one.

![]() Caltech Seeking to Blend Sciences: "Caltech aims to transform itself and the way its students and faculty conduct research by combining the disciplines of physics, biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and engineering under the aegis of its Information Science and Technology (IST) program, thus easing and expanding cross-disciplinary collaboration." My first thought on this was positive, "this is the way to go". But are there alternatives to this blending and emphasizing information technology in research?
