The Design of the Sports Comprehensive Logo

Members of ISAW tend to get involved in projects cutting across departments.

James McCready, a former pupil of ISAW, organsied a sponsored walk of the West Highland Way. He was supported by the National Sports Comprehensive, which is a national pilot run in the PE department of St Maurice's High school. Mr Swierczek, Principle teacher of PE, approached us in ISAW. He asked if we could get involved in designing a logo for the Sports Comprehensive.

We downloaded a free version of Adobe Illustrator as we thought it would best suit our task. Illustrator provides vector graphics and industry standard export facilities.

Both departments found that a circular logo would be best as it would symbolise the coming together of our school in a community.

We firstly used the ideas of the Olympic Pictograms illustrating different sports. On consulting with the PE department, they did not want all the icons to be representing sports only as the Sports Comprehensive also aims to raise achievement in areas such as academic, supported or extra curricular study. We decided to split the icons equally between sporting and other appropriate symbols.

Since we were using icons based on the Olympic Designs, we thought it best to ask permission for their use. The response from the Olympic committee was dissapointing. They would not allow us to use their images in our logo. We still liked the idea of representing sports by pictograms. So I redesigned icons from scratch, basing them on the design of the 2003 World Summer Games icons.

One of North Lanarkshire Education’s mottos is "Aiming Higher", three doves flying together in a group.

The final icon crafted was taken from the Charter Mark logo. St Maurice high school has been awarded the Charter Mark for two sessions in a row. We thought it would be a good way of signifying the excellence within a community.

Due to embroidering limitations a simplified version of the North Lanarkshire Sports Comprehensive logo has been used on their clothing kits.
