Web Services Enhancements 1.0 for Microsoft .NET (WSE) rocks. (I'm sorry - I had to say it.) I've been looking at WSE for quite a while and I love what I've seen so far. If you haven't played around with it yet, I highly encourage you to do so.

  • The processing model of WSE was designed very well; it's configurable and highly extensible.
  • The programming model feels very natural. Of course, a large amount of credit goes to the .NET Framework.
  • The pipeline (Microsoft.Web.Services.Pipeline) can be hosted independently. (Neat-o.)
  • WSE/GXA expands the range of possibilities for developing SOAP endpoints and clients. (Rah! Rah! GXA!)

As with all Microsoft technologies, it will be interesting to watch WSE adoption by vendors. Underpinning this adoption (of course) will be the overall acceptance of GXA specifications. The fact that IBM, Microsoft, VeriSign, BEA, and others are developing and pushing out these specifications is encouraging and highlights their importance to the industry at large.

It will also be interesting to see just how deep GXA will be pushed down into the guts of the .NET Framework and other Microsoft technologies. MSMQ already supports WS-Routing. What's next?

Anyway, cheers to the XML Web Services team for pushing out such a cool technology!
