Today, President Bush announced that his administration would file a brief against University of Michigan's admissions criteria. Students are given points based on several criteria including their race. These points can help both white and black candidates alike. (See UM President's response). See also the comments by Regent Clarkson Kelly of the State Universities of Iowa and a response by Iowa State University President Geoffroy.
By articulating the admissions criteria as a case of quota (note not as an affirmative action) the administration is trying to showcase that they are above board. This is nonsense. Senator Lott was lot more above board. He expressed his inner thoughts clearly. Lott is more honest, you could understand his position well. I guess President Bush wants to continue and extend what President Reagan began.
Affirmative action is not quota system. Groups, whether they are students, employees, or even customers, are underrepresented in any community, be that be schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, etc, for a reason. It is the role of the enlightened citizenry to remedy these injustices. When a government decides to do what this administration is proposing it becomes one not for the people!
