The West Highland Way

This is a map of the route of the West Highland Way

This is a map of the West Highland Way Route. It has clickable areas for different sections of the Way

We Will be completing our walk over 7 days.  Stretching 95 miles from Milngavie to Fort William.

Day 1: Saturday, 12th April 2003: Milngavie to Balmaha (18.5 miles/29.5 Km)

On our first day we begin at Milngavie and progress through its woodland and proceed into vast countryside in the Campsie region.  We will cross over the hillside and arrive at the town of Drymen, which will hopefully be a break from our walk assuming the time is ok.  We then enter a large area of forest and climb over Conic Hill that that is a steep incline, up and over until we reach the days destination of Balmaha.

We will be staying in Bay Cottage, which is a Scottish Tourist Board three star B & B.

Day 2: Sunday, 13th April 2003: Balmaha to Inversnaid (14.5 miles/23.5 Km)

Balmaha is situated at the edge of Loch Lomond.  We will advance north along the east side of the Loch, through rough terrain, as the tracks are quite rocky (the local council are working on making the footpaths flatter).  The path elevates and lowers quite frequently and although shorter than the first days walk it may take longer due to the footpaths.

When we reach Inversnaid we will be transported to our accommodation, the Corriearklet.

Day 3: Monday, 14th April 2003: Inversnaid to Crainlarich (13.5 miles/21.5 Km)

The terrain becomes a little worse than the previous day but the distance is shorter so timing will be fine.  We will finish the Loch Lomond stretch and head further into the highlands.  Hopefully reaching Crainlarich.

We will be spending the nite in the Craigbank Guest House.

Day 4: Tuesday, 15th April 2003: Crainlarich to Bridge of Orchy (13.5 miles/21.5 Km)

Todays walk takes us through a lot of historic land, where livestock was transported from the highlands to the lowlands to be sold at the markets.  The terrain is relatively flat and spread out, so a much more relaxing day for us.

Our destination will take us to Bridge of Orchy where we will be staying in a Bunk House.

Day 5: Wednesday, 16th April 2003: Bridge of Orchy to Kingshouse (12 miles/19 Km)

This stretch covers lovely Scottish scenery as we pass over two large hills, which allow us to see magnificant views until we reach the mysterious and historically enriched, Glencoe

We will be staying at the Kingshouse Hotel.

Day 6: Thursday, 17th April 2003: Kingshouse to Kinlochleven (9 miles/14.5 Km)

Although the shortest distance of our walk, it contains a very steep stretch known as the "Devil's Staircase", Which is a jagged incline reaching the highest altitude on the walk.  It remains down hill from the top until we reach our days destination of Kinlochleven.

We will be staying in the Tigh na Cheo.

Day 7: Friday, 18th April 2003: Kinlochleven (14 miles/22.5 Km)

On our last days hike it is John's 18th birthday (poor soul).  We take a sharp incline to exit Kinlochleven and we walk at a high altitude alongside old military paths used by the Jacobite clans.  After passing through many stretches of woodland and farmland we will enter Glen Nevis and witness the spectacular view of Ben Nevis (Britain's highest mountain).  Soon after we will enter Fort William and our journey will be over.

We will be staying in the Dalkeith Guest House.
