watched the first episode of the first season of "24" last night. Audrey and I borrowed the DVDs from my parents. It was an impressive show, very well done. The only thing that got to me were the little montages of everyone where they would break to commercials during the season. That wasn't a big deal and I think it was made more obvious by the DVD, which had no commercial breaks. Everything else I thought was movie-like in it's execution. Much higher standards than I'm used to seeing on television.
Since we've been travelling so much lately I think I might push to stay in tonight and watch 2 or 3 more episodes. I have a feeling the sooner I'm done watching this the sooner I will be able to get on with "real life." This already appears to be one of those shows that really sucks you in.
I don't want to watch the second season because I want to wait for it on DVD. Which brings up an interesting point: the shows ratings are determined by its TV viewers, but how many people like me are there out there? How many people will not view it on television because they want to watch it in sequence on their own time? I'd imagine for a show like this quite a few. It would be a shame if they stopped producing episodes simply because they thought the fan base was gone when it really wasn't.
Still, if the "Leprechaun" series of movies can go straight to video and DVD then I assume that "24" can too. If the Hollywood execs see the fan base on television disappearing and the fan base on DVD purchases rising I would imagine that they would change their release strategy accordingly. Then again these are the same people who are in a pissing match with the public over file-sharing.
