All this talk about the shuttle (both people saddened by the loss, and people saddened by the media circus) of late. This incident as well as other peoples experiences with death has reaffirmed my commitment to an idea I got a few years back.
I don't want a funeral...I want my body disposed of in the cheapest legal way possible. Instead, I want a foundation (which hopefully I will have funded by the time of my death, if not donations will have to be taken by the executor of my estate) that will fund a mariachi band to play around my hometown on my birthday every year for eternity at some random location. One year they could play at the Wal-Mart parking lot, the next year in front of the Astrodome or something. The foundation will hire the mariachi band every year, pay all necessary city permits, and they will play for about 4 hours. If anybody asks them who they are, they should reply (very cryptically), "We are playing in honor of the memory of a very great man," and then bust out "La Bamba" or something. Under no circumstance should they every mention who I am (even though it will get out eventually).
My reason for this is simple, mariachi bands are inherently happy, and I think the would be a fitting reminder of my life, which has also been pretty happy.
