The World Wide School Library looks like an interesting project. Lots of classic texts in the list. Though I can't help but notice that Newton's "Principia" is no where to be found. It's also not on Project Gutenberg. Strange.
Still, if you do nothing else, you should check out Charles Mackay's "Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds".
