What a month it has been. You had to be thinking that I was gone (like for good) or gone traveling. It was the traveliing variety. My last entry mentioned the trip to Springfield, illinois and while there was nothing especially memorable about the trip I did learn about a new kind of food offering. We were in an Irish grill/bar and they had something called a shoe. Essentially it was a half bun with a slab of meat - typically hamburger but it could be chicken or steak, piled high to overflowing with french fries (at least the ones I saw). It roughly resembled a horseshoe. People would load it up with Heinz and start plugging away at the pile. It was a gross display of gluttony and pretty damn hard to resist. But I did resist and settled for the northerners version of nachos - not really very good, but the dark ale was.
After Springfield, I spent a week in Seattle learning all about the new operating system, Vista, and how to troubleshoot installation issues. Highlight of that week was dinner at Pier 66 in downtown Seattle and a trip to the Microsoft Store. Yes it was like being in Geek Heaven. Microsoft occupies over 100 buildings in that little part of Bellvue - pretty amazing display of how far a guy with an idea has come.
After Seattle it was on to St. Simon, Georgia and a training session with a group of judges. I have a lot to share with you about the island but not enough time today. I think I will write a short piece about that trip and post it in the stories section of RiverDogs. I will tell you when that happens so just hang in there. After Georgia it was a quick trip to Detroit with a short drive (90 miles or so) to Fremont, Ohio. Fremont is most famous for being between Toledo and Cleveland. I really don't have any gastronomical tales about Fremont. I ate lunch at the hospital where I was doing the training and it was real cheap - that's about it. I drove past the Jeep plant in Toledo where upwards of 2000 jeeps were growing accustomed to wet, cold weather. The parking lot around the plant was full to overflowing with 1000's of new jeeps.
What's happening this week? Funny you ask - we are traveling. I just cannot stand being in one place for too long (that is not true) so we are going to St Louis. It is Thanksgiving week and I hope this tome finds you better than well. We are thinking of you and hoping that your Thanksgiving is among the best you have ever had. The RiverDogs will be back next week with an update on everything.
Speaking of that - Leander high school lost two games early in the season but none since and will be playing the second round of the playoffs this weekend. They have matured into a very good team. Texas lost their second game about 9 days ago to Kansas State and finish the regular season this Friday against the Aggies. If they win - and they should it will be a date in Kansas City for the Big 12 title - then a BCS bowl. Hook Em baby. But for now it is RiverDogs out - out with my Rolleiflex and my Nikons, looking for all the pictures that are fit to take.
