We have been back from Mexico since Saturday evening and I am still on the cloud of relaxedness. It was the best of vacations, and I don't even know where to start to share it with you. I guess I could break the experience into requisite parts - you know, like food, sights, sounds, weather, shopping, and whatever else you can imagine.
Think of a city that has been in existence for over 500 years, has near 100,000 people and has no stop lights. Picture policemen dressed in uniforms from 200 years ago, riding horses on cobblestone streets. Narrow streets lined on both sides with 12 foot walls and some of the most intriguing doors you have have ever seen. And, behind those doors, a home or courtyard that exceeds all your expectations. (Well, that is not always the case.)
Needless to say we had a great time in San Miguel De Allende and plan to return, not once but several times in the future. We got to the last day and wished that it was not the last day. The food was very reasonable and very good. The shopping was...how can you say endless. Kathy would tell you that she could have shopped more, I was ready to go to the bar.
We stayed at a place called Casa De Liza, kind of a villa in itself - we stayed in four different places within that villa, and it was wonderful. Just an example - breakfast every morning, delivered to our room. We would fill out our menu each night and leave it under the door. Every day our hostess would cheerfully deliver the omelets, toast, oatmeal, fruit, cajetas, huevos rancheros, marmalade, coffee, orange juice, etc. I think you are getting the picture.
I took hundreds of photos. The town was filled with out-of-towners. Mexicans tend to go on vacation the week between Christmas and New Years so there were many people from Mexico City in San Miguel for the week. And of course, there were many Americans as well. We had no trouble with the language - well in some cases people had to write numbers on their hands, or show us on the calculator. We all came away expressing the desire and the need to learn Spanish. It is high on my list of things to do this year.
I learned many, many things about San Miguel and am anxious to go back again. We were there five days and barely scratched the surface of where to go and what to do. We had wanted to go to some of the neighboring towns but ran out of time.
I have many stories to tell about our wonderful and not so wonderful experiences there - like our two hour visit with the drunk and deranged artists. We have some of the artist visit on video - it would be a huge hit on YouTube - can someone sue you for putting their drunken visage on YouTube? I should find out. You would laugh your butt off - it was even funny at the time, but a little threatening.
I intend to resize some of the photos and post them to RiverDogs. Bear with me, this might take a while. If you feel the urge to explore San Miguel, please drop a line. We have many tips of where to go and what to do. Heck, we might even plan to go along with you. But for now, it's RiverDogs out. Be back soon!
