Everyone Is An Ass... or Why Finding an Apartment In Boston Sucks
Well, surprise surprise. That turned out badly. So, here are a bunch of assholes. And, on another note, here is another group of assholes.
First things first. The realtor took us to look at this great place last night. We told them it was exactly what we were looking for. The realtor said, "Well, if you're interested let us know so we'll stop showing it," and we replied "We're definitely interested," and took applications which we told them we would drop by or fax in the next morning (today), and that we could also give them a check today. So this morning the first thing I did was fax in the applications and call the real estate agent to tell him it was on its way. He said great and when could we give him a check. I said today but it would take a couple of days for the money to transfer from our savings to our checking account. He said, "Oh, that's no problem at all." He then claimed he was very excited to present us to the landlord and that he knew "just how" he was going to present us, and that he intended to make us look like "superstars". Around noon I got an email from him telling me he had just presented us, thought it went well, and that the landlord was going to get back to him in a couple of hours. So then we were both on pins and needles all afternoon. Finally, at the end of the day, 5pm, I get an email back from the realtor (not a phone call, mind you) with the "bad news" that "apparently" today... today another agent showed the apartment to another party and that person took it. At this time please refer to the beginning of this story where we were told that they would stop showing the apartment. Now, I have a question for the world in general - why is everyone such a bastard? I'm not sure how Anne Frank managed to think people were basically good at heart when she was living in constant mortal danger because I'm already done thinking that and I've never been under circumstances that terrible. It just astounds me how selfish and assaholic (I know that's not a real word) just about everyone in the whole world is. Is it really possible that the friends I have and my family are truly the only people who are even slightly nice and thoughtful (I won't even say they're all perfect) in the world? I said to Rob, "Why does everyone get away with being an asshole?" and he said, "Because everyone else is an asshole."
The second group of asses are the members of theBoston Vegetarian Society. Do you want to know why? Because they have obnoxious posters on the T that say the following: "Do it for someone you love tonight. For dinner, go vegetarian." Then they list some claims that cutting out meat will reduce your risk of heart disease and cancer. Alright, well these people are idiots. I'm not saying all vegetarians are idiots, but I have problems with anyone who's preaching their opinions to me as fact, and anyone who acts superior because they think they know more than the rest of us. If these people actually cared about how farm animals are treated, then instead of just telling eveyone not to eat any meat, they should tell people to eat meat from small farms and organic farms - from people who raise animals in pleasant environments instead of torturous factories. These are the only people they hurt by boycotting meat because the huge meat processing companies aren't hurt by small losses. In fact, I can't even bear to get into this. I just saw the poster after already stewing about the evil realtors for a few hours and it made me even more furious. Go cram your stupid rhetoric down someone else's throat. I had enough of this bullshit in college, thanks. If you want to read about more idiots, here are some links:
More Idiot Vegetarians
Here is the poster I saw today.
My favorite here is the quote about how all life is equally valuable no matter how primitive a nervous system, etc. Great, so does that mean we think all other animal life on the planet is made up of evil creatures that enjoy causing others to suffer? Because that's what they're claiming about every person who's not a vegetarian. Do you see what I mean?
PETA - these people really suck.
Now I have to add one disclaimer and then I'm going to bed. I love animals. I always have too many pets and let them get away with murder. I don't want animals to suffer. In fact, mostly I believe they are more deserving of having good things happen to them than people are. Why? Go back to the beginning of this post and re-read it in case you forgot. And I have no problem with someone being a vegetarian for their own personal reasons. I have a problem with people who are vegetarians making sweeping judgements about everyone else, believing they are superior, thinking they are making some kind of grand difference in the world, and thinking that they actually don't use products tested on animals. Don't any of them realize that you can't sell a product that is going to be eaten or applied in some way to a human (ie: makeup, shampoo, toothpaste, etc.) if it hasn't gone through animal testing? Even companies that claim they don't do animal testing aren't telling the whole truth - they may not do it themselves, but they at least are using products in their formulas that have been tested on animals by someone else and approved in the past.
Alright, this has gone on entirely long enough and I'm losing track of my thoughts. Sorry because it's so long and no one wants to read such a long bitter post, but I feel a tiny bit better having typed it all out.
Goodnight.

So we went to look at an apartment tonight in the North End. It was through a real estate agency which means we have to pay a fee, but in this case it might be worth it. We had a bad experience with a real estate agency last year but this visit was good. They only took us to the one place I had inquired about. It was great. Very small, but that's typical for the North End and what we care about more (we now realize) is having a decent place in a good location where we can stay for a while. This place was definitely well taken care of and it's kind of a big building and the landlord obviously takes good care of it. The only thing that's in question is I think the real estate agents have to semi-convince the landlord to take a dog. But they claim this won't be a problem. We have to fill out applications etc., so hopefully nothing about that process will cause a problem but I don't think it will. Rob has a really long rental history and we left our last place in great shape so I think we'd look like good tenants.
Anyway, we'll see but if this one doesn't work out we'll keep looking, probably mostly in that area.
So, people at my work have been insane for the last 2 days. People on one project team have been screaming at each other in the middle of the office. Very professional, right? No, very annoying to me and I'd imagine embarrassing to anyone else involved. I just can't believe people are such idiots. It's asanine.
