Having spent part of the 80's and again in the early 90's in Virgina Beach this caught my eye. They probably have some deal with the Southland Corp, who owns 7-11. My reasoning, is we use to have a standing bet. If you jumped out of a plane over Virginia Beach, it was even money odds that you'd land in a 7-11 parking lot.

The Virginian-Pilot via Hampton Roads - All eyes are on Oceanfront's new surveillance system.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- After eight weeks of installation and testing, the Police Department on Monday switched on its new facial recognition video camera system, which it hopes will aid officers in their never-ending search for criminals.

Police, in a news briefing Monday, insisted the surveillance system poses no threat to ordinary, law-abiding citizens, with Deputy Chief Gregory Mullen adding, ``We may not ever make an arrest with the system.'' (ed. emphasis added)

The Beach joins Tampa, Fla., as the only other city in the country with sucha system. Tampa's system was installed in June 2001 in its Ybor City tourist area. The system has also been tested at various airports around the country.

Tampa has yet to make an arrest using the system, said Mullen, but that's not a concern. The system's deterrent effect interests law enforcement official just as much, Mullen said. If a fugitive knows there's a good chance he'll get caught at the Oceanfront, he said, then he may go elsewhere. (ed. emphasis added)

Gee whiz ... even the Deputy Chief says it doesn't stop crime just moves it someplace else. Isn't the whole justification/point of systems like this suppossd to be to stop crime and catch criminals, not just move them around?
