Research firm IDC, in a Microsoft-funded study, has reinforced a Microsoft argument that Linux is more expensive to administer than Windows, a factor that makes Windows less expensive overall in most server uses. [news.com]
Ok, but does real world cares?
In a real-world situations I’ve seen, the cost difference between the two rarely the deciding factor. When it comes to platform choice, there’s another major factor that comes before cost: current expertise of people who are already on the team.
Even if a project is being started from ground up, the expertise of decision-makes plays a bigger role than a cost question. And people who are equally experienced with both platforms are rare. It’s no surprise really – it takes many years to become an expert on any given platform. But even those black-belts almost always decide for themselves which platform ‘feels’ better to them.
For the experience comes bias, comes resistance.
