Remember David Vincent? The bloke who fought The Invaders from Vega? That was a fabulous TV series in the 60s. They even did a new Mini series in 1995, which was really spooky. It all started off in front of an old diner ... so have a look at the Diner Museum. Sadly, not a lot of pictures - you have to sign up to their e-group to access those. "It began with a closed deserted diner ... and a man too long without sleep to continue his journey. It began with the landing of a craft from another galaxy ... "

Maybe I should try that? Steve Hall's Adrants. "The staff at ZDNet Tech Update has been laid off. How are they looking for work? They have put themselves up for bid on eBay as a turnkey online publishing solution. A new form of classified advertising? Will it work? Monitor their bids on eBay to find out."eBay has pulled the 'auction' meanwhile.

Flicker. I was actually looking for Tony Conrad's Site, but that has been taken over by a Country & Western singer with the same name. So if you want to know more about the Tony Conrad I mean, there's not much out there; a short article here and a review here.So let's go to Flicker instead, which has got nothing to do with Tony Conrad, but with downloadable Underground Videos, Performances and Films. "Welcome to Flicker, home page for the alternative cinematic experience. Here you will find films and videos that transgress the boundaries of the traditional viewing experience, challenge notions of physical perception and provide cutting edge alternatives to the media information technocracy."

DAF. Reformed, reunited, back together again. For tonight this is the last of my Pop/Punk links. Gabi was a friend of mine, when he was still in Düsseldorf. Their first single is called "Der Sheriff", Untertitel: "Ein anti-amerikanisches Lied". (Spiegel). The official website is here. Absolutely Fabulous. This is the best thing about Saddam Hussein, George W. and us Tony I've seen so far. Brilliant! A Channel 4 production - Real Player needed.Between Iraq and a Hard Place. "The comedy trio Bremner Bird and Fortune bring their viewpoint on the Iraqi crisis in their own unique way. We're about to invade Iraq. Again. We invaded in 1917? and 1941? and 1991. This time though, we're dealing with Saddam Hussein. But then, we've been dealing with Saddam for years. Why now? The Americans see the chance to bring traditional Western values to the Middle East (aka the guys with the diapers on their heads): democracy (from the people who brought you George W Bush); freedom (from the people who brought you Guantanamo Bay) and economic prosperity (from the people who bought you Enron)." Mhmmm ... ! I had some of their lemon-flavoured toffees on New Year's Eve (the whole box in fact) and the next morning I felt sick. Which is a good sign, it means their toffees must be really good, or otherwise you wouldn't be sick the next day. Farrah's Original Harrogate Toffee - unfortunately I was to stupid to find any ordering information on the website. It seems you have to buy them directly at their shop in Harrogate, Yorkshire. North Yorkshire that is."John Farrah - Harrogate Toffee was established in 1840. John's mother, an assistant in a local bakery was taught the recipe by her employer; Mr. Swan. The all important method was handed to John, who saw the potential and started commercial distinctive blue and silver tins. The lemon flavour was designed to combat the putrid taste of Harrogate's sulphur water."

Tiny little books. An exhibition of 4000 Years of Miniature Books at the Indiana University. Fabulous. "Miniature books, most of which are less than three inches tall and some of which are smaller than a penny, have delighted readers for centuries. Popular because they were easily carried or concealed, these historic books range from tiny "Thumb Bibles" to illustrated nursery rhymes. The earliest piece of block printing to which an accurate date can be ascribed--a Japanese wooden block print from about 770 AD--is a miniature scroll and part of the Lilly Library's collections. Hardcore-Linguistics. Ruhrgebietssprache.de translates Ruhrgebiets-German into proper German. This is obviously not for my English readers, but surely Robert and Schockwellenreiter will appreciate this particular link. Example: Variation 2: Die geschlossene Eröffnung: Sprecher 1: Wat gibt! Sprecher 2: Nix gibt! Treasure Island, Part 2. I already had a Treasure Island link a while ago, now here is the man himself, Robert Louis Stevenson. This is a compact little website with a wealth of pictures and illustrations. "The University of South Carolina marked the centenary of Robert Louis Stevenson's death in 1894 with a special exhibition illustrating his life and writing career. Drawing on the excellent Stevenson holdings in the University Libraries' Department of Rare Books and Special Collections and on additional items from the G. Ross Roy Collection of Scottish Literature , the original exhibit included most of Stevenson's first editions, the early magazine publication of Treasure Island and other adventure stories, and a full range of his travel writings, sensation fiction such as the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde , and later Scottish novels. This online version includes additional materials not included in the original exhibit as well as hypertext links to other sites of interest. The Man of Bronze. Thomas Raus's website deals with the German Doc Savage publications and translations. "Still, in the early 80s, if you were at all interested in speculative fiction, you could not fail but notice the Doc Savage paperbacks. They were published by Pabel, whose paperbacks one could instantly recognize by their format, type, logo, spine. And since Pabel was one of the major places to look for science fiction, fans would develop an eye for the Pabel look."Well said indeed. Although I don't necessarily like the design, it's nevertheless Branding properly done - all across the Pabel range at that time.

Cambridge, UK. This is a somewhat lengthy entry about this picturesque little town, where I used to live and work for 6 years after I came to the UK in 1993.The picture on the left is taken by Derek Langley, who has about 250 Cambridge pictures on his website, all of which you can order as prints. The Cow and Calf pub was the place where I used to drink my beer. The pub was a time-warp back into the seventies. Unfortunately it has been closed down and demolished; Les, the Landlord, commited suicide. A really sad story. Here are Online Dictionaries maintained by the Cambridge University Press, where I worked as a book designer. Of course Pink Floyd are from Cambridge and Syd Barrett still lives in solitude in Cherry Hinton. Have a look at the Roots of Cambridge Rock. Because I once almost fell over him (and his wheelchair) while crossing a road (I was looking in the other direction), here's Professor Stephen Hawking. Last but not least some general information about the town, the history and - mostly important - the traffic.

This is the last thing I'm going to post about the Keynote (Hmm, I'm using Safari). Horst of The Aardvark Speaks has rounded it up quite beautiful: "Boy, was today's Macworld expo keynote an experience. The folks at Apple must have been pretty busy over the past months - today Jobs revealed a number of exciting new products - iLife (Apple's iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie and iDVD rolled together into one integrated software suite), Safari (a slick and extremely fast web browser), Keynote (a presentation software that seriously kicks PowerPoint's butt) and the amazing 17" PowerBook, which does not only have a gorgeous big screen, but also a keyboard that starts to glow when it gets dark so that you can still type in absolute darkness (Wannahave factor: 1000). Not to forget Airport Extreme, FireWire 800 and the smaller 12" PowerBook. A written summary of the keynote in weblog style (reverse chronological order) is available from MacCentral, a videostream is available at the Apple QuickTime site"

The move came several hours after the Starship Exeter Website (www.starshipexeter.com) was featured on the front page of SlashDot.Org, a popular Website which thrives on, in their own words, "nerd oriented news." Immediately, the Starship Exeter site was deluged with visitors attempting to view Starship Exeter "The Savage Empire." During the next few hours, traffic to the Exeter Website rose to beyond 10,000 hits an hour. The bandwidth demands proved more than Mac.Com could handle and the decision was made to remove the Starship Exeter Quicktime movie files. Mac.Com has offered to make the movies available again with a bandwidth restriction of 500 megabytes every six hours. This would render the movies unaccessible to most visitors of the Website. The best fan related move online since Troops [linkfilter.net]Update 2: Exeter is back online at the Mac.Com address.
