A picture named histilt.jpgThere's more. At lileks.com there are Comics, Matchbooks, Old Ads, Motel Postcards (see left) and - what a relief! - old American Diner pictures I was looking for earlier on. Proper design and art at last.

A picture named uncle.jpgI'm excited. Big Little Books are comics. They're books. They're a joyless synthesis of both. Fantastic: Major Matt Mason is there, The Invaders, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. - a really nice cover gallery. Lots of thanks to Anita for the link.

A picture named saucer.jpgRemember David Vincent? The bloke who fought The Invaders from Vega? That was a fabulous TV series in the 60s. They even did a new Mini series in 1995, which was really spooky.

It all started off in front of an old diner ... so have a look at the Diner Museum. Sadly, not a lot of pictures - you have to sign up to their e-group to access those.

"It began with a closed deserted diner ... and a man too long without sleep to continue his journey. It began with the landing of a craft from another galaxy ... "

A picture named LEIGH1~1.jpgSigns. Let's post something positive about the USA for a change. A picture named shit.gifNice one. Bush approves nuclear response -- The Washington Times. A picture named 9.gifFlicker. I was actually looking for Tony Conrad's Site, but that has been taken over by a Country & Western singer with the same name. So if you want to know more about the Tony Conrad I mean, there's not much out there; a short article here and a review here.

So let's go to Flicker instead, which has got nothing to do with Tony Conrad, but with downloadable Underground Videos, Performances and Films.

"Welcome to Flicker, home page for the alternative cinematic experience. Here you will find films and videos that transgress the boundaries of the traditional viewing experience, challenge notions of physical perception and provide cutting edge alternatives to the media information technocracy."

A picture named saddam.jpgAbsolutely Fabulous. This is the best thing about Saddam Hussein, George W. and us Tony I've seen so far. Brilliant! A Channel 4 production - Real Player needed.

Between Iraq and a Hard Place. "The comedy trio Bremner Bird and Fortune bring their viewpoint on the Iraqi crisis in their own unique way.
We're about to invade Iraq. Again. We invaded in 1917? and 1941? and 1991. This time though, we're dealing with Saddam Hussein.
But then, we've been dealing with Saddam for years. Why now? The Americans see the chance to bring traditional Western values to the Middle East (aka the guys with the diapers on their heads): democracy (from the people who brought you George W Bush); freedom (from the people who brought you Guantanamo Bay) and economic prosperity (from the people who bought you Enron)."

Farrah's Original Harrogate Toffee - unfortunately I was to stupid to find any ordering information on the website. It seems you have to buy them directly at their shop in Harrogate, Yorkshire. North Yorkshire that is.

"John Farrah - Harrogate Toffee was established in 1840. John's mother, an assistant in a local bakery was taught the recipe by her employer; Mr. Swan.
The all important method was handed to John, who saw the potential and started commercial distinctive blue and silver tins. The lemon flavour was designed to combat the putrid taste of Harrogate's sulphur water."

Popular because they were easily carried or concealed, these historic books range from tiny "Thumb Bibles" to illustrated nursery rhymes. A picture named robot.gifHardcore-Linguistics. Ruhrgebietssprache.de translates Ruhrgebiets-German into proper German. This is obviously not for my English readers, but surely Robert and Schockwellenreiter will appreciate this particular link.

Example:
Variation 2: Die geschlossene Eröffnung:

Sprecher 1: Wat gibt!

Sprecher 2: Nix gibt!

Promise. Another Ratswine cartoon this week. Hans from Stockholm was so kind to send me some really fab nibs, which is another reason to draw one right now - and because of that, my drawing style is bound to change. Oh, the Gillott #170 is great....and in the UK, have a look at scribblers.

A picture named 7ZecheZollverein.jpgMore Ruhrgebiet. Photos by Thomas Lehr.
"Over a period of 250 years the effect of coalmining and heavy industry changed the appearance of this area. Villages here grew into small towns, and these in turn grew and expanded into one large town.
Today with the disappearance of the mines and the furnaces, this region is again going through a change. Because of this, only in a very few places you can see the origins of the towns development on the landscape.
These photographs try to show both the origins and the changes, but most of all they look at the people living in the area."

Alan Vega tried to force them to stay , but - they didn't like to be 'touched' by a crazy NY Rock'n Roll Star ... there you go. It was fab. Best gig ever (except The Damned at the 'Markthalle'). A picture named ti2.jpgTreasure Island, Part 2. I already had a Treasure Island link a while ago, now here is the man himself, Robert Louis Stevenson. This is a compact little website with a wealth of pictures and illustrations.
"The University of South Carolina marked the centenary of Robert Louis Stevenson's death in 1894 with a special exhibition illustrating his life and writing career. Drawing on the excellent Stevenson holdings in the University Libraries' Department of Rare Books and Special Collections and on additional items from the G. Ross Roy Collection of Scottish Literature , the original exhibit included most of Stevenson's first editions, the early magazine publication of Treasure Island and other adventure stories, and a full range of his travel writings, sensation fiction such as the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde , and later Scottish novels. This online version includes additional materials not included in the original exhibit as well as hypertext links to other sites of interest. "

Another interesting site about the Scottish author is The Robert Louis Stevenson Website with links to e-texts, museums & libraries and more.

Exactly. Bloated code. The DTP application Calamus for Atari ST/TT fitted comfortably on two Floppy Disks; was much better than today's Quark and used only little RAM. The Underground Railroad provided hiding places, food, and often transportation for the fugitives who were trying to escape slavery. "Still, in the early 80s, if you were at all interested in speculative fiction, you could not fail but notice the Doc Savage paperbacks. They were published by Pabel, whose paperbacks one could instantly recognize by their format, type, logo, spine. And since Pabel was one of the major places to look for science fiction, fans would develop an eye for the Pabel look."

Well said indeed. Although I don't necessarily like the design, it's nevertheless Branding properly done - all across the Pabel range at that time.

A picture named 235-1.jpgCambridge, UK. This is a somewhat lengthy entry about this picturesque little town, where I used to live and work for 6 years after I came to the UK in 1993.

The picture on the left is taken by Derek Langley, who has about 250 Cambridge pictures on his website, all of which you can order as prints.

The Cow and Calf pub was the place where I used to drink my beer. The pub was a time-warp back into the seventies. Unfortunately it has been closed down and demolished; Les, the Landlord, commited suicide. A really sad story.

Here are Online Dictionaries maintained by the Cambridge University Press, where I worked as a book designer.

Of course Pink Floyd are from Cambridge and Syd Barrett still lives in solitude in Cherry Hinton. Have a look at the Roots of Cambridge Rock.

Because I once almost fell over him (and his wheelchair) while crossing a road (I was looking in the other direction), here's Professor Stephen Hawking.

Last but not least some general information about the town, the history and - mostly important - the traffic.

A picture named robot2.gifThis is the last thing I'm going to post about the Keynote (Hmm, I'm using Safari). Horst of The Aardvark Speaks has rounded it up quite beautiful:

"Boy, was today's Macworld expo keynote an experience. The folks at Apple must have been pretty busy over the past months - today Jobs revealed a number of exciting new products - iLife (Apple's iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie and iDVD rolled together into one integrated software suite), Safari (a slick and extremely fast web browser), Keynote (a presentation software that seriously kicks PowerPoint's butt) and the amazing 17" PowerBook, which does not only have a gorgeous big screen, but also a keyboard that starts to glow when it gets dark so that you can still type in absolute darkness (Wannahave factor: 1000). Not to forget Airport Extreme, FireWire 800 and the smaller 12" PowerBook.
A written summary of the keynote in weblog style (reverse chronological order) is available from MacCentral, a videostream is available at the Apple QuickTime site"

A picture named 104_83_F_F.jpgEven more old American things. Dime Novels and Penny Dreadfuls, 8000 covers, all scanned in a good resolution. Amazing.
"The dime novels were aimed at youthful, working-class audiences and distributed in massive editions at newsstands and dry goods stores. Though the phrase conjures up stereotyped yarns of Wild West adventure, complete with lurid cover illustration, many other genres were represented: tales of urban outlaws, detective stories, working-girl narratives of virtue defended, and costume romances."

A picture named TV0021-small.jpgMore old American ads. This time not that old. Ad*Access has archived over 7000 ads from 1911-1955. Again, browsing for hours is guaranteed.
"Ad*Access concentrates on five main subject areas: Radio, Television, Transportation, Beauty and Hygiene, and World War II, providing a coherent view of a number of major campaigns and companies through images preserved in one particular advertising collection available at Duke University."

A picture named A0298-01-72dpi.jpgReally old ads are at EAA - The Emergence of Advertising in America: 1850-1920. Fabulous website. One can browse there for hours.
"The Emergence of Advertising in America: 1850 - 1920 (EAA) presents over 9,000 images, with database information, relating to the early history of advertising in the United States. The materials, drawn from the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library at Duke University, provide a significant and informative perspective on the early evolution of this most ubiquitous feature of modern American business and culture."

A picture named robot.gifUpdate: Exeter offline. STARSHIP EXETER - NCC-1706. Starship Exeter "The Savage Empire" off line. The move came several hours after the Starship Exeter Website (www.starshipexeter.com) was featured on the front page of SlashDot.Org, a popular Website which thrives on, in their own words, "nerd oriented news." Immediately, the Starship Exeter site was deluged with visitors attempting to view Starship Exeter "The Savage Empire." During the next few hours, traffic to the Exeter Website rose to beyond 10,000 hits an hour. The bandwidth demands proved more than Mac.Com could handle and the decision was made to remove the Starship Exeter Quicktime movie files. Mac.Com has offered to make the movies available again with a bandwidth restriction of 500 megabytes every six hours. This would render the movies unaccessible to most visitors of the Website. The best fan related move online since Troops [linkfilter.net]

Update 2: Exeter is back online at the Mac.Com address.

"The U.S.S. Exeter, freshly recrewed and commanded by Capt. John Garrovick, is on a mission to save a ship infected with the deadly Canopus Plague. The Exeter must travel to the homeworld of Andorian Lt. B'fuselek to find the cure. But Andorian rebels have other plans . . . and so do the Klingons! "

A picture named robot2.gifMark Twain about long German words (like Heimatsicherheitshauptamt?) and other peculiarities of the German language.
"The Awful German Language" by Mark Twain: "4. "Verdammt," and its variations and enlargements, are words which have plenty of meaning, but the sounds are so mild and ineffectual that German ladies can use them without sin. German ladies who could not be induced to commit a sin by any persuasion or compulsion, promptly rip out one of these harmless little words when they tear their dresses or don't like the soup. It sounds about as wicked as our "My gracious." German ladies are constantly saying, "Ach! Gott!" "Mein Gott!" "Gott in Himmel!" "Herr Gott" "Der Herr Jesus!" etc. They think our ladies have the same custom, perhaps; for I once heard a gentle and lovely old German lady say to a sweet young American girl: "The two languages are so alike -- how pleasant that is; we say `Ach! Gott!' you say `Goddamn.'"" Via Industrial Technology and Witchcraft. Fab link that is.
