Before the cool computers of desktop publishing was the hot heat of wax and the sharp steel of Xacto knives. Manual page composition made men of young lads like Gene Gable. In this installment: Gene ponders the lost art of paste-up, or the waning of waxing.

A picture named banner.jpgThe Navy Painter. I just love the blogosphere. Gordon Coale, who also runs an excellent weblog, left the following comment regarding my 'Submarines in art' entry:

...the image you used was drawn by my grandfather, Griffith Baily Coale. He was instrumental in starting the Navy's combat artist program. I have a site on him that has examples of his other work for the Navy as well as his amazing writings about his experiences and travels while in the Navy.

The website is fascinating - excerpts from diaries, books and paintings. Fab.
