Why won't they stand and fight?

A well-written piece on Lawrence Lessig appears in wired.com (why didn't this story hit the RSS feed?).  It is a chronicle of his development as the star of cyber law.  At one point, he remarks how he gets standing ovations at his talks --

They stand and applaud, he told himself, but why don't they fight?

Good question.  Andrei Cherny talks about the  internet generation having no compelling reason to participate in government.  Study after study and anecdote after anecdote reveal that many in the tech community (excepting large corporate citizens) see government as "damage" to be routed around rather than managed.  But, as a state senator here told the local AeA legislative forum - "Government can do tremendous harm if you leave us to our ignorance."

There is so much at stake here.  The future of the net, the future of government, the future of society -- but, no one is jumping into the political ring.
