Computer Recycling Bill. California may become the first state requiring computer makers and sellers of television sets to charge buyers to recycle the machines. By Bloomberg News. [New York Times: Technology]

One wonders why you can't clean up some of these machines, load linux and star office plus mozilla and present school systems with extra hardware to do basic stuff like web applications.  We recycled machines in Georgia that were replaced during the Y2K madness and found schools turning their noses up at windows re-habs because they said the machines wouldn't run the latest software.  Perhaps we need to educate the school systems in the concept of "good enough" systems.
