Congress, in true democratic fashion, is attaching national identification rules to the budget bill to pay for the war in Iraq (oh, wait a minute, it's not a war -- Congress never declared one). In order to get a drivers license, you will have to submit more information than is currently required to buy a gun (well, autos do kill 50,000 plus a year). The states, of course, will pick up the tab.

Congress set to impose ID card rules. WASHINGTON -- Congressional negotiators have agreed on a sweeping new system that would nationalize standards for driver's licenses and state identification cards, requiring states to verify the authenticity of every document that people use to prove their identity and show their legal residency. [Boston Globe -- National News]

So much for the new drivers' license law signed here in Georgia. The lines will get longer as drivers license clerks will have to check with issuing authorities to verify:
  • birth certificates
  • social security cards
  • utility bills
  • mortgage statements
  • etc
Ironic, isn't it, that the furor that erupted over the MATRIX project has been ignored. Seems Florida is attempting to revive that project too.

And, this event explains Choicepoint's acqusition of EzGov, which does license renewals. Choicepoint will become the de facto vendor for drivers license renewals... The plot is much clearer now.

Oh, and your state will be required to keep copies of these records for 7 years.  Has anyone checked their state's data security lately?  But, I forget, Choicepoint will protect that data, won't they? comment [] 5:02:09 AM
