Per my previous posting, the Videomail Alpha is available to play with. Here are a few comments on using the tool:

  1. You can login and create an account. If you've already created an account for Audio Blogger, that will work with Videomail.
  2. Once you login, select 'Send Videomail' and address the mail, give it a subject, and click the square record button. You can preview it before you send it and re-record if needed.
  3. You can monitor if your videomail has been viewed using 'View Status'.
  4. The tool was built using Flash MX, Dreamweaver MX, ColdFusion MX and Flash Communication Server MX.
  5. There are LOTS of known issues, but I'd like to hear what you've found or would like to see.
  6. This is experimental and goes without warranty, etc.

Enjoy!

Recently I've been experimenting with various simple approaches to multimedia messaging. Ever since I began working with Flash Communication Server MX, I had an itch to create a simple utility for easily sending videomail. So here it is.

A few quick notes on this:

  • It uses existing email accounts and clients, so the videomail is part of your everyday email usage.
  • It is _very_ lightweight; users only need Flash Player 6.
  • It can record high-quality, and stream back low-quality (user choice)
  • You need a webcam to use this. If you don't have one, go buy one -- they're cheap.
  • Give it a try at bilbo.macromedia.com/videomail/
