Rich Client Applications
I work for a company that provides a rich client technology, so I am obviously tracking the space. This interesting article: http://www.sys-con.com/java/articlenews.cfm?id=1634 came out in the latest JDJ. What is most interesting is the feedback section. There are many people defending SWING, but from the amount of complaints alone it is obvious that there is a problem.
The complaints about SWING range from it being too big, to too slow, to too memory intensive, to too difficult to build. The concensus on the defense is that it is fine if you know how to build it right. It seems that therein lies the real problem. It is simply too hard for the majority of developers to effectively use it. SWT is an option that helps somewhat, but I still think the answer will come on the tools side, and I do think it will be based in Java (not a proprietary format like flash or .Net).
